Enchanting Escapes with a Holiday Home in Split
Split is a fantastically charming city on the Adriatic coast in southern Croatia. It was built around the 3rd century BC, and today its marble promenades and tiny alleyways are filled with bars, coffee shops and boutiques. The city sits on a peninsula that juts out into the sparkling blue sea, and is nestled underneath magnificent green mountains. It's the perfect city for travellers on a romantic holiday, history and culture buffs, or families on a beach holiday. This is a city that you'll want to enjoy on your own schedule, and renting a holiday home or holiday apartment in Split is the best way to do that.
Split: A Historic Old Town
The ruins of Diocletian's Palace take up half of Split's historic old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was once the palace of the Roman emperor, Diocletian. Its cavernous cellars are completely preserved and contain temples to ancient Roman Gods. In Medieval times, long after the palace had been abandoned, a small city emerged from inside the palace walls. Today, there are numerous homes, restaurants and shops inside and adjacent to the palace. It's a labyrinth of tiny alleyways, stone columns and arches with travellers and locals chatting and dining al fresco. On Peristyle Square, you can catch a live art performance or just sit on the steps with a glass of wine and watch the night unfold. Afterwards, you can head home to your private holiday apartment in Split.
The two most well-known museums in Split are the Ivan Meštrović Gallery and the Split Archaeological Museum. Ivan Meštrović is one of Croatia's most famous artists and the museum itself is a marble villa with a great lawn overlooking the Adriatic. There are nearly 1,000 works of art on the property, mostly sculptures and drawings by Meštrović. At the Split Archaeological Museum, located on a garden estate, you can find more sculptures, as well as mosaics, pottery and nearly 150,000 prehistoric artefacts from the region. TUI Villas provides several holiday apartments in Split within walking distance of the museums.
One of the best things about Split is its beach culture, and there are many oceanside holiday apartments for rent in Split. Locals take a dip before breakfast, and sip coffee and play cards at cafes next to the beach. At night, some of the more popular beaches turn into open air dance clubs. Many of the beaches are family-friendly with playgrounds and picnic tables. There are also secluded rocky beaches under pine trees, and sandy beaches with shallow water. Split's main beach, Bacvice, is a Blue Flag beach known for its clean water and pristine facilities, and is just a short walk from the Old Town. The coast line south and east of Split is lined with beaches that are easily accessible by car or public bus.
Local Food and Wine
Split is a foodie's heaven; with fish and greens markets that are open daily, unique wine varieties specific to Croatia and restaurants creating new twists on traditional Dalmatian cuisine. The fish market is the largest in Croatia, and is not only the place to go to find the freshest fish possible, but a cultural experience not to be missed.
Split Holiday Apartments and Homes
Holiday apartments and homes in Split run the gamut from tidy and modern to traditional with Venetian-style shutters and red tile roofs. Whether you're looking for a holiday home with a small garden by the sea or a downtown holiday apartment with a terrace, spending your getaway in a holiday home means more independence, more opportunities for authentic experiences, and less stress. You can go for a swim in the morning and have breakfast on your own schedule. Cruise the art museums and pick up a bottle of wine and make a romantic dinner in your own space, or grill some fresh fish from the local market while your kids enjoy the pool.
In addition to being an enchanting city, Split can be the jumping off point to a wide range of other destinations: Croatia’s famous islands, Dubrovnik, Plitviče Lakes National Park, Krka National Park and many more. Krka National Park is a pristine wonderland of lakes, rivers and waterfalls in a mountain setting, and only an hour’s drive from Split. It’s also home to a Franciscan monastery, situated in the middle of tiny Visovac Island. Plitviče Lakes National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is a little further north. It's a series of 16 lakes in a forested, mountain setting. Each lake has its own specific ecology and unique colour.
Popular Destinations Nearby
From the main port of Split, it's easy to reach several of Croatia's world-famous islands, like Brac, Hvar and Vis. Vis Island is a tiny island with a population of only a few thousand. It’s lined with coves and Vis Town is truly charming with its stone facades and red tiled roofs. Brac Island is known for its wide sandy beaches and for being more authentic than its more famous neighbours, Hvar and Korcula. Hvar Island is the most cosmopolitan of the islands, with pristine stone walkways, galleries and cafes.
Many cities in London, Manchester and Bristol offer several low cost, non-stop flights daily to the main airport in Split, Resnik Airport. Flying is the best way to get to Split from England, however once you're in the country it's easy to move around the country by train – or even better, yacht!
Travel Time & Weather
July and August are peak tourists months. It’s sunny, warm, and the liveliest time of year to visit. May, June and September are a bit quieter and there may be afternoon rain showers. If you want to escape the crowds, the months of October - April are cooler, and a bit rainy and romantic. Holiday homes in Split are the perfect way to enjoy Croatia no matter what weather or the time of year.
