Exciting holiday apartments in Siena

Siena, a veritable time-capsule with open spaces and medieval streets, has a very different atmosphere from that of its former rivals, Florence and Pisa. Choose from spacious holiday apartments in the surprisingly small historic centre, or rent pet-friendly holiday homes with pools and terraces in the surrounding hills. Book online at TUI Villas and begin to plan your Tuscan adventure!

Siena's religious relics and animals

Be sure to read up about St. Catherine of Siena before you go. Her head and thumb are displayed as relics in the Basilica of San Domenico, and she is depicted in the beautiful golden frescoes of the Siena Cathedral's Piccolomini Library. Also, make it your mission to find Siena's seventeen animal contrades. These hand-sized emblems of rhinos, snails, hedgehogs, and more mark age-old territories, and are found just above head height on street corners.

In and above the Piazza del Campo

Siena's principal square, Piazza del Campo, is the site of gatherings, picnics, and the world-famous Palio di Siena horse race. Those wishing to climb the 400-odd steps of the Campo's Torre del Mangia can enjoy a view of Siena's landmarks, hills, and perhaps your holiday house – just keep in mind that water bottles cannot be taken up. Feel free, however, to refresh at the pumps next to the white-washed Fonte Gaia, particularly on a hot summer's day.

Excursions and eating like a Tuscan

If uncertain about lampredetto – a cow's fourth stomach – try some wild boar, or have a go at making Tuscan-style pork sandwiches in your holiday apartment. Your holiday letting in Siena is also a good base for travelling to the coast and swamps of the Maremma, or to Pisa to experience the thrilling pull of the Leaning Tower, or even to Florence to see Il Duomo di Firenze’s huge dome and the truly stunning views from Piazzale Michelangelo. However you spend your vacation, you are sure to create fond memories in Siena and Tuscany before heading back home.
