The Jewel of Istria
Famous for its beauty, both man-made and natural, Rovinj is often called the jewel of the Istrian Peninsula. There are medieval churches, museums, protected natural parks, fresh seafood and famous Istrian wine, and over a dozen small islands in the Rovinj archipelago. There are many holiday apartments and homes in Rovinj, from traditional to modern, suited for couples or families, so you can have all the privacy and freedom you need while on holiday in this enchanting town.
Ancient Sights in Rovinj
The city of Rovinj is steeped in history. It was once an ancient Illyrian island, and throughout the centuries was under the control of the Roman, Byzantine, Venetian and Austrian Empires. One of the most famous sights in Rovinj is the baroque Church of St. Euphemia, which is also a tomb of the saint of the same name. The church sits on top of a hill in old town Rovinj and its steeple dominates the landscape. Travellers can climb the 200 steps to the top of the bell tower for a fantastic panorama view of the Rovinj Archipelago.
Art and Culture in Rovinj
The art and culture of here can be experienced inside traditional spaces, like museums, but also in the streets. The Batana House is a museum dedicated to the batana, a traditional flat-bottom boat used by fisherman from the region. The museum is a celebration of the city's seafaring culture and has won several awards for its work in commemorating traditional practices. Rovinj is also famous for its artistic traditions. On Grisia, local artists have set up shop in the narrow alleyways, and their works line the walls. There are also numerous art galleries and little shops selling artisan crafts. Along these streets you can see the architectural influences of so many empires, from Byzantine to Roman. Many of the holiday apartments in Rovinj from TUI Villas reflect this historic architecture as well.
Beaches, Forests and Islands in Rovinj
The Istrian Peninsula is known for its verdant forests and coves of sparkling blue water. One of the best places to take a walk or picnic is the Punta Corrente Forest about a 20 minute walk south of town. This protected area also has cafes, bars and secluded swimming spots. If you're looking for a more developed beach, Mulini Beach, close to Punta Corrente, is clean and beautiful and a great place to spend the day. There are 14 small islands nearby the city of Rovinj, and an easy day trip by ferry or guided tour if you're looking for more seclusion and more nature. You can also admire all of this beauty from the private terrace of your holiday apartment in Rovinj.
The region of Istria is known for its seafood, unusual wine varietals, fantastic olive oil, and the world's largest truffles. Rovinj, with its hip restaurants and bars, is becoming a foodie destination, but it's also an amazing place to find fresh local food and whip up something in the privacy of your own kitchen. There's a daily open air market where you can buy produce, wine, cheese, olive oil, cured meat and the famous truffles. Outside of town, it's possible to visit family vineyards and forests where you can hunt for your own truffles. And the fishing port in Rovinj is a lively place to buy the freshest clams, crabs and mussels possible.

Destinations Around Rovinj
The entire region of Istria is beautiful and fascinating, and there are many destinations near to Rovinj. The village of Vrsar is a 45 minute drive up the coast and around the Lim Bay. The village is smaller and more secluded than Rovinj. South of Rovinj, almost to Pula, is the town of Fazana, the jumping off point for Brijuni National Park. The protected island of Brijuni is a nature lover's paradise. If you're looking for a more lively scene, the city of Porec is bigger with a wealth of water sports and adrenaline activities available.
There are daily flights to the city of Pula, 38km south of Rovinj, from many European cities, like Vienna, Frankfurt, Munich, Oslo, Zurich, Milan and London. From Pula, you can rent a car and be in Rovinj half an hour later. Of course, you'll want to stop at all of the quaint seaside villages along the way! You can also fly into Zagreb, rent a car and take a leisurely three hour drive through idyllic Croatian countryside. There are also direct buses from Pula to Rovinj (45 minutes), and from Zagreb to Rovinj (3 hours.)
When to go
July and August are peak tourists months. It’s sunny, warm, and the liveliest time of year to visit. In peak summer, the average temperature is 24 degrees Celsius and the city gets 13 hours of sunshine. May, June and September are a bit quieter and there may be afternoon rain showers. In June, there's a children's regatta festival in honour of the Batana boat. If you want to escape the crowds, October and April are a bit cooler and rainier, but that just makes Rovinj even more romantic than it already is.
