General information

There are so many things to see and do in Norway. Your holiday is sure to be filled with wonderful memories. This is a country that is perfect for young families and groups of friends. You are sure to find something that will make everyone happy and keep them thinking of Norway as their dream destination long after the holiday is over.

History of Norway

The most famous section of Norwegian history is the story of the Vikings. The Vikings made Norway a great seafaring nation and raided foreign countries including Ireland, England, and France. At the time Norway was divided into several kingdoms and it took many years before the country finally became united in 955 AD. Norway has been a republic since 1884 when the last king was forced to abdicate due to the growing popularity of democratic values. If you are interested in the history of Norway and the Vikings, you will find a number of well-run and very interesting museums on the subject in most of the country's cities.

You will find a wide range of accommodation options on TUI Villas to suit all needs during your stay at a holiday home in Norway. The country has a number of different styles of holiday homes, from quaint country cottages, to modern city apartments, to holiday homes in the mountains. Norwegian cuisine

Don't leave Norway without trying some of the country's famous cuisine. Some of the specialities, such as fermented fish may seem a bit extreme in taste, but you are sure to find something that you like. Kids will love Lefse, which is a potato pancake that is commonly served rolled up with sugar and cinnamon, or jam. Reindeer meat is a staple of Norway and is often prepared with cloudberries. Fiskeboller are small fish balls made from any white fish mixed with a special potato dough. If you have fussy kids, don't worry. Hot dogs have become very popular in Norway and you will find them at most street corners. The more adventurous may want to try Lutefisk, which is fish fermented in lye and hung out to dry.

Popular destinations

If you only have time for a short stay in Norway, then you should explore one of the following places. The capital city of Oslo offers exciting museums, beautiful churches, and some of the best food in the country. Stay in a city centre holiday apartment in Norway and discover all that Oslo has to offer. Those looking for adventure may want to try the Svalbard Islands instead. Known as the realm of the polar bear, this area offers some of the best hiking trails in Norway. Families may want to check out Bergen. This city offers a wide range of culinary treats, quaint city architecture, and cruises on the Fjords.

Travelling to Norway

The easiest way to travel to Norway from Great Britain is to fly. Norwegian Airways flies from London to Oslo and the flight time is just about two hours. There is no direct train journey connecting the two countries but if you don't mind a few transfers on your journey, you can enjoy a very scenic ride. The train trip will take well over 24 hours hours, including a few comfort stops. If you would like to take your own car, the drive time is around 20 hours and will let you see a great deal of Europe on the way.

Best time to travel

The best time of the year to travel to Norway depends on what you would like to see. June to August promises slightly warmer weather and the chance to experience the midnight sun. December is very pretty, with snow flurries and Christmas festivals. January to March is the perfect time to visit if you want to spend your holiday skiing. Ski lodges come at a premium at this time but you may still find a decent price if you stay in a holiday home in Norway. Spring is the ideal time to visit if you want to see the wild flowers and hike a few trails. The weather in Norway is generally cold so you should always pack some warm clothes.

General travel advice

Norway uses the Norwegian Krone as its form of currency. There are ATM's that accept VISA and MasterCard if you are in need of cash. Travelling to Norway requires a Schengen visa for non-European citizens. European citizens are allowed visa-free travel throughout Norway. There are no specific vaccination requirements for Norway but you should make sure that you are up to date with all your standard vaccines before travel. If you are travelling with a dog, you will find that a number of holiday homes in Norway are pet-friendly. Note that some establishments will charge an extra cleaning fee if you have a pet.
