Explore the Costa Blanca from your very own Moraira holiday home
Located on Spain's Costa Blanca between bustling Valencia and the holiday hotspot of Benidorm, the charming coastal town of Moraira remains relatively unspoilt by development. Building regulations mean that the town is refreshingly free of high-rises, such that Moraira holiday apartments tend to offer old world charm. Add some great beaches, renowned restaurants, and a picturesque Old Town, and you've got the perfect holiday home by the sea.
All about Moraira
A Moraira holiday home gives you the flexibility and ease to explore this beautiful corner of Spain's eastern coast at your own pace. Miles of glorious coastline, some truly fine dining, and some great day trip ideas await you in this delightful little seaside town. And keep in mind that many Moraira holiday homes come with their own pool!
Moraira — old and new
The Costa Blanca region where Moraira is located has been inhabited since prehistoric times. It was home to Moorish settlers (hence the name) before being re-claimed for Spain in the 13th century. Until recently (historically speaking), Moraira was simply a collection of huts where fishermen from the inland town of Teulada stored their gear. The huts eventually became houses and a thriving fishing town quickly developed. Moraira was further developed in the 1970s but strict building guidelines ensured that the town has retained its quaint, old fashioned charm to this day. Your own Moraira holiday home allows you to enjoy the town's relaxed, laid-back vibe.
The beaches of Moraira
Though it stands apart from many other holiday destinations on the Costa Blanca, Moraira does conform to the norm in one area: its magnificent beaches. L'Ampolla beach is perhaps the most popular of the beaches within easy distance of Moraira, and its golden sands and children's play area make it an especially good choice for families with kids. L'Andrago beach is a slightly rockier affair, but it more than makes up for this with a great restaurant that looks out across the surf, making it ideal for a lunchtime stop-off. Platgetes beach is a mix of the two. The beach is partly sandy and partly rocky, which means there's lots of fun to be had investigating rock pools!
Out and about in Moraira
Located on L'Ampolla beach is the Castillo de Moraira (Moraira Castle). Not really a castle at all, this 20m high horseshoe-shaped fortification was one of many such defences built along the coast during the 18th century in an attempt to protect towns and villages from invading pirates from the Berber Coast of North Africa. That failed. Now fully restored after some serious bombardment from the British Navy during the 19th century, this so-called castle is a symbol of Moraira and makes for a lovely place for a stroll from your Moraira holiday home.
Local food and drink
Paella has its roots in Valencia and the Costa Blanca. If you've tried the dish elsewhere, get ready for the real thing. Or, indeed, a number of delicious variations on the real thing. As well as the usual mixed paella that can be found all over Spain, you'll find seafood paella (abanda), a style that has an eggy crust (con costra), and even one that's baked in the oven (al forn). Another local delicacy is fidena, which is a pasta dish cooked in fish stock and then served with squid. And another advantage of your holiday home at the beach is your very own kitchen, where you can try to replicate some of these local dishes yourself.
Attractions near Moraira
If for some reason you ever want to leave the peace and tranquillity of your Moraira holiday home and head for somewhere more lively, then look no further than Benidorm. Only 40km to the south of Moraira, the shops, bars, and nightlife of Benidorm are perfect if you're looking for a change of pace, without heading all the way to Valencia. And do stop off at Calpe, on your way, even if it's just to gaze upon the monumental rock that stands at the entrance to its harbour like a mini-Gibraltar! The hill town of Guadalest, about an hour's drive inland, makes for another great day trip. Beautiful scenery, a magnificent reservoir and a salt and pepper shaker museum await you.
How to get to Moraira
Moraira is served by Alicante-Elche Airport (ALC), which is a little under 100km along the coast to the south. Many airlines fly direct from a number of British airports. Buses are waiting to take you on from the airport to your Moraira holiday home. A rental car is another option, and if you're looking to explore a little of the Costa Brava, then renting your own vehicle is particularly recommended. Travelling the entire distance from the U.K. could make for a fun family adventure, but do make sure to bargain for around 24 hours behind the wheel in each direction.
The best time to visit
The temperatures in Moraira are very comfortable for most of the year, but if you're looking for some serious sun, a holiday between May and August is your best bet. April can be unpredictable, but September and October are normally ideal if you prefer pleasantly warm temperatures. Also keep an eye out for the dates of the many fiestas that take place in and around Moraira throughout the year. The Moraira Village Fiesta takes place in July and comes complete with painted statues paraded through town, bull running, and brass bands. Be sure to check the local calendar!
