Your Dream Vacation Starts with a Holiday Apartment in La Gomera
The island of La Gomera is the second smallest of the Canary Islands group, which belongs to the Spanish province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Renting a holiday apartment in La Gomera can be quite affordable if you plan and book early. The island is known as la Isla Magica ('the Magical Island') due to its beautiful and surreal scenery. Most notably, the island is home to Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For a laid-back holiday, book a holiday home in La Gomera and let the journey begin!
Things to do in La Gomera
Did you know that there are black sand beaches in La Gomera due to ancient volcanic activities? Make sure to check them out as you explore the island. For hikers, La Gomera is a paradise. Garajonay National Park, Los Rocos, and Los Organos are some places young-at-heart travellers should make sure to see. If you prefer a laid-back holiday, just stay put on the beach and sunbathe.
Also, don't miss your chance to visit Playa Santiago to admire the romantic sunsets. La Gomera is famous for its wine production, most of which is white wine. While you're here, enjoy some of the best wines on the island. Despite being the second-smallest island in the Canary Island group, La Gomera is in no way less interesting than the rest.
Garajonay National Park
Garajonay National Park is perhaps the most famous attraction site on the island. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1986, Garajonay National Park will take you into a totally different world of virgin laurel forests, high humidity, and a constant mist that covers everything. The park is home to a variety of birds and reptiles, including the Gomeran lizard and Gomeran skink. Seasoned hikers especially love this park, for when you reach the highest point of the trek, the view is astonishing and well worth the effort. In spring, a flowerbed of pink blossoms gives the forests a romantic and refreshing vibe. As you book your holiday apartment in La Gomera, research the park's guided tours as well.
Valle Gran Rey
You can reach the village of Valle Gran Rey easily from San Sebastian or La Gomera. It takes approximately one hour to get to the village from La Gomera by car, with stunning views along the way. There are also public buses – check the timetable to plan according to where your holiday La Gomera apartment is located. Once you get to Valle Gran Rey, there are so many things to enjoy, starting with strolling around and admiring the pristine landscape. An ideal point of departure is at the top of the valley. From here, you can reach Mirador César Manrique, Los Santos Reyes church, and Hautacuperche, all excellent stopping points offering panoramas over the valley. There are also popular biking tours and whale- and dolphin-watching trips.
From Valle Gran Rey, you can continue on to explore Los Organos, a marvellous cliff of ancient lava rocks. Winds and the ocean have gradually eroded the land to craft one of the most astonishing natural spaces you'll ever see, starting at sea level and stretching 700 meters high. To admire the scenery from afar, arrive by sea or take a boat trip. Depending on the location of your holiday apartment La Gomera, getting to this amazing place could take half an hour or more. But worry not – taxis and rental cars are available.
Other popular destinations and neighbouring locations
San Sebastián de La Gomera, often called 'Isla Colombina' due to its connection to the discovery of America, is the capital of the island and offers a wide variety of activities geared toward visitors. Follow its cycling and hiking trails to explore the island, and check out its many amazing restaurants and bars serving traditional Spanish dishes. Local wine is a delight, especially Garajonay white wine.
Agulo may be the smallest town on the island, but that doesn't make it any less important or beautiful. In fact, people claim that Agulo is the prettiest village on the island. Once you get to the town, set out on a relaxing stroll and enjoy the scenery. The bonfires of San Marcos, which happens yearly on the eve of April the 24th, is a unique tradition on the island. Join the many visitors to watch people gather to jump over mounds of jupiter wood in the streets. The smell of burning wood fills the village, and people celebrate with traditional music. It's said that the tradition began as a way of expressing gratitude to Saint Marcos for protection and fulfilled promises. Chipude, another district worth visiting, houses almost one-third of famous Garajonay National Park. The district is also known for its pottery, vineyards, textiles, and banana plantations.
