Absorb history and spectacular coastlines in Galicia
Galicia is located in the North-West corner of Spain and is most famous for its capital, Santiago de Compostela which is the destination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. An autonomous region, the area has its own rich cultural heritage and unique history. Renting a holiday home in Galicia allows you to immerse yourself in another world, learn about the local culture, and explore the area's spectacular coastlines and verdant nature which is quite distinct from the rest of Spain.
What to see and do from your holiday home in Galicia
Galicia offers a range of attractions and activities for all kinds of visitors, whether you are travelling as a couple, a family, solo or in a large group. This leafy corner of Spain is particularly blessed when it comes to stunning natural landscapes, historic sites, and amazing food and wine.
Cathedrals, monasteries and convents: historic sites of Galacia
From your holiday home in Galicia, you will be ideally placed to visit some of the most impressive religious historic sites in Europe. The Camino de Santiago is a world-famous pilgrimage route which sees thousands of people trek every year from France to Galicia. There are a number of important monuments along the way, culminating in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, a beautiful church completed in the 13th century. Another impressive relic is the Monastery of Santo Estevo, a 10th-century Benedictine monastery nestled in the scenic mountains near Sarria. Going back even further in history is the Tower of Hercules, an ancient Roman lighthouse at Coruña. This is Spain's second tallest lighthouse and the oldest Roman lighthouse still in use.
The unique natural landscapes of Galicia
Your holiday home in Galicia will be adjacent to some truly stunning natural landscapes, which are quite distinct to anything you will find in the rest of the country. Inland, the region is characterised by green hills and dramatic mountains, with plenty of hiking trails to allow you to enjoy the scenery. Galicia is also known for its spectacular coastal scenery, which ranges from sandy beaches to awe-inspiring cliffs. The Rías Baixas are a series of inlets on the south-western coast of Galicia which feature long, white sandy beaches framed with mountains and cliffs plunging into the ocean. On the northern coast of Galicia is the spectacular Cathedral Beach, a wide sandy beach which has a number of natural rock formations resembling gothic architecture, giving the beach its name.
Enjoy local food and wine
It is unsurprising that this region dominated by coastlines boast some of the best seafood you will find anywhere. Typical local dishes include razor clams, mussels, scallops, crabs and octopus, usually served with rice in a rich sauce. For a truly local experience, buy some freshly caught mussels or clams and take it back to cook in your holiday apartment in Galicia. Other popular local specialities include chorizo, tetilla cheese and the sweet dessert Tarta de Santiago. Fabulous local produce isn't limited solely to food, however. Galicia also produces some world-class wines. Visiting the vineyards in wine-producing regions such as Rías Baixas and tasting the local wine is a must-do activity when in the region. The wines here are typically dry white varieties produced from the Albariño grape.
Popular destinations of Galicia
Anywhere along the coast of Galicia will offer a beautiful setting for your holiday. The Rías Baixas is one of the most popular areas to stay, with its lovely coastlines, beaches and easy access to the famous vineyards of the region. This part of Galician coastline is full of quaint villages, whereas other parts of the Galician coast are much less populated. This means fewer options for restaurants and so on, but also a more remote and adventurous experience. Santiago de Compostela, the capital of the region, also has much to offer in terms of accommodation and attractions. Here visitors can not only visit the world-famous cathedral, but also other historic sites such as the Monastery of San Martiño Pinario and the Plaza de Obradoiro.
How to get to your holiday home in Galicia
There are two major airports in Galicia, Santiago Airport and A Coruña Airport, both with direct flights from London. From the UK, you can also connect to these Galician airports via Madrid, Barcelona and Seville. Direct flights from London take around 2 hours. You can also reach your holiday home Galicia by train or by car. From within Spain, there are direct trains from Madrid and other major Spanish cities, or you can drive from Madrid to Santiago de Compostela on the A-6 Motorway in around 6 hours. You can travel by car or train all the way from the UK by taking the Eurostar or Eurotunnel Le Shuttle to France, and then connecting with the road or rail network in Spain via France.
The best time to rent a holiday apartment in Galicia
The best time to visit Galicia is probably July and August when the weather is warm and the days are long. Unlike other parts of Spain and Europe, the crowds do not get too intense here even during these months, so you should be able to find ample accommodation options for reasonable prices. In winter the temperatures can get quite cold in Galacia, even dropping below freezing. Rain, fog and occasional snowfall are a feature of Galician weather throughout winter, as well as parts of spring and autumn. Rainy and cool temperatures can extend into May and June, however, these months are also some of the best times to see the natural beauty of the region, with the countryside filled with wildflowers and lush green landscapes.
