Idyllic Holiday Apartments in Calabria With Great Views
Find exactly what you're looking for on your next family holiday in TUI Villas' incredible selection of villas, beachside bungalows and sub-alpine holiday apartments in Calabria. With constant customer support as you book your accommodation, you'll be able to find exactly what you need when planning your holiday on this unspoilt, largely undeveloped southernmost part of mainland Italy.
Get to know Calabria
Settle into a holiday home in Calabria and you'll be introduced to a part of Italy you thought was a thing of the past. Here at the toe-end of the boot, the last part of the Italian Peninsula before Sicily, you can still find the zooming vespas, chaotic streets, untouched natural beauty and forgotten historical grandeur that has made many other parts of Italy a cliché. Take amazing hikes, swim in pristine seas and connect with the area's prehistoric past with ease.
Discover the Caribbean of Europe
While Calabria offers the best of many worlds, it does picturesque beaches and historical towns particularly well. See why Calabria is called the 'Caribbean of Europe' at beaches such as Tropea, Scalea, Isca Marina, and Praia a Mare, to name a few. Seeking a photogenic Italian seaside village or fortified hill town with a visible history stretching back thousands of years? Look no further than the likes of Scilla, a working fishing village; the medieval hill town of Badolato; the mesmerising mountain hub of Cosenza; or pretty much anywhere in Calabria – you can find fantastic holiday apartments throughout the region.
Age-old museums with impressive finds
With a long history as an important region for the ancient Greeks, Romans, and just about anybody else crossing the Mediterranean, Calabria boasts museums housing some of Southern Italy's finest archaeological displays. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale delle Sibaritide is found on one of the most important sites in prehistoric Calabria, where the city of Sybaris once stood. Although the area had a population of over 100,000 in the 7th century BC, it's something of a hidden gem these days. More visitors frequent the impressive Museo Nazionale di Reggio Calabria, and with good reason. Among its many artefacts are what may be the world's most impressive examples of ancient Greek sculpture, the two incredible Bronzi di Riace, which were discovered here in 1972.
Book a holiday home by one of Calabria's national parks
Booking a holiday apartment near one of Calabria's stunning national parks gives you direct access to amazing mountain hiking, biking and even skiing. Spread out across the region, the beautiful national parks of Pollino in the north, Sila in central Calabria and Aspromonte in the south offer an alternative to the South's pristine beaches and ancient villages. TUI Villas has holiday homes on the fringes of all three of Calabria's national parks, including large multi-bedroom houses in Sangineto, Gerace and Spezzano della Sila featuring large terraces with amazing mountain views. If you have a smaller family or travel group, there are also plenty of one- and two-room self-catering holiday rentals that make for a cosy base after a day trekking in the mountains.
Unique food and drink even by Italian standards
Whether you prefer to use the self-catering facilities at your holiday apartment in Calabria or eat out, you're in for a culinary treat. Every city, town and village around Calabria's coastal regions boasts a local market where you'll find some of the best, freshest seafood imaginable. Also, there are some special dishes at Calabrian restaurants that you'd struggle to find elsewhere in Italy. The pepperoncino is the unofficial icon of Calabrian cuisine, so if you like spice, you're in the right place, and the soppressata you get in Calabria is likely to be the best you've had in Italy. Sardella, a paste of olive oil, spicy pepper and sardines is a unique speciality of Calabria's Ionian Sea coast that's also well worth a try if you can find it.
Explore more of Italy's treasures
A holiday apartment in Reggio Calabria or holiday home in the Calabrian countryside can be a good springboard for discovering some of southern Italy's other treasures. The unique city of Lecce in Puglia, just 2.5 hours from Trebisacce, looks like a film set with ancient whitewashed buildings and stark limestone cliff formations set against pristine turquoise waters. If you're looking for something less known, the quiet seaside town of Sapri just up the coast in the Salerno region has unpopulated, beautiful beaches fringed by tree-laden hills that stretch into the distance. Another convenient excursion from any holiday apartment in southern Calabria is a day trip to the eastern edge of Sicily. Just take a 20-minute boat ride from Reggio Calabria to Messina, a crossing that runs constantly throughout the day.
How to get to Calabria
You can fly directly to Reggio Calabria from all over Europe, which receives daily flights from several major European cities. A lot of low-cost carriers also fly internationally directly to Lamezia Terme, which is particularly handy for those who have booked a holiday home directly by the sea along Calabria's Tyrrhenian coast. A smaller airport in Crotone, on the Ionian Sea, serves smaller domestic and regional routes. For those booking a finca in Italy and wanting to drive from Rome, Naples or Sicily, the main A3 autostrada runs through Calabria from Salerno to Reggio Calabria. It's also possible to reach Reggio Calabria by train directly from Milan, Rome and Naples, or by boat from Messina in Sicily.
What time of year to visit Calabria
The climate varies markedly across Calabria throughout the year. The west coast, moderated by the Tyrrhenian Sea, gets a fair amount of rain between November and April. The Ionian Sea side (east coast) is much drier and arid nearly all year round. The best time for a holiday apartment on a Calabrian beach is between May and October, when the water temperatures get up to 26°C. During the peak of summer, in July and August, Calabria offers plenty of respite from the heat in the mountains, although during winter, the mountains can get seriously cold, with snow on the ground between December and March.
