A picture of unspoiled beauty with Provence holiday homes
The region is large and diverse but united by a particularly interesting and unique culture that’s an integral part of France’s personality as a whole.
What makes Provence holiday apartments such a great choice in France?
Provence has a lot of different types of holiday to offer travellers. Nice is famous for its palm trees and superb beaches, as well as its proximity to Monaco and Ventimiglia in Italy, for an international day trip to add to your holiday. The region is part of the Alpes-Martimes, with superb ski resorts in the mountains to the north making it a popular destination in Provence. Holiday apartments in the Var region, perhaps in the glamorous St Raphael with its chic restaurants and excellent hiking routes around the picturesque countryside, are another alluring option. Discover historic Avignon in the Vaucluse territory, with its Medieval architecture including the famous Pont d’Avignon Bridge.
The benefits of choosing a holiday apartment in Provence
Opting for holiday apartments and larger homes in Provence is the ideal choice for travellers who prefer independence and choice on their holidays. You can browse the markets and pick up fresh Provençal produce, such as cheeses, cured meats and fine wines, taking them back to your holiday home to prepare. Perhaps the idea of your own private pool in this almost endlessly sunny region appeals? You can take a dip metres from your bedroom as soon as you wake up or whenever the desire takes you if you rent a property with a pool. Flats in the middle of the cities are ideal for getting to the best sights quickly, or maybe a Southern France holiday by the sea will appeal. You can trust in finding great quality homes throughout Provence.
Exploring Provence with holiday homes for every traveller
Provence is an optimal destination for family holidays, with something to offer every age group. If you are an active family you will enjoy cycling through the countryside of the Bouches-du-Rhône, an area which inspired many of Van Gogh’s paintings. Passing on an appreciation of history and art to children is easy in beautiful towns such as Toulon and Nice, with museums including the Musée Matisse. You can also choose to enjoy your Provence holiday home with your dog as the French love their pets and many rental properties accept them. The countryside, promenades and romantic old streets of Provence’s historic towns are ideal for walking your dog in the sunshine. A romantic getaway to Provence, with views of lavender fields or across the attractive bays of Nice and Cannes, will be an unforgettable experience.
The particular gastronomic delights of Provence
Holiday apartments are a great opportunity to source local ingredients wherever you are and try your hand at cooking something delicious for the friends and loved ones joining you on your trip. Given its proximity to Italy and its location on the Mediterranean coast, you will find an appealing mix of traditional French and Italian influences in the dishes of the region. Aïoli sauce served with fries, salt cod and olive oil with artisanal bread and ratatouille are some of the typical Provençal dishes you could make. Additionally, French bistros and restaurants are an excellent way to be treated to some of the best cooking you will ever taste. Whether in the heart of Marseilles or in a countryside establishment you have discovered on a bike ride, you can always depend on finding delicious food in Provence.
The different types of holiday apartment in Provence
As such a large region it is no surprise that there’s a huge range of holiday homes to choose from in Provence. Grand country homes that can easily house a dozen guests can be found, as well as gorgeous villas in exclusive locations such as the suburbs of St Raphael. The towns tend to favour apartments, especially towards the city centres, although family homes can also be found in Nice, Marseilles and other larger cities. An area blessed with hundreds of days of sunshine every year, many homes also come with pools for exclusive use by guests. Patios and gardens are also common, meaning you can enjoy twilight dinners or drinks outdoors with your fellow travellers.
Popular destinations within Provence
There is a lot to choose from in the area but you can narrow down your choice by deciding what kind of trip you would like to enjoy in Provence. The French Riviera is a large expanse that stretches along the coast and includes Nice, Cannes and other enviable hotspots for holidaying in the sun. Camargue in Bouches-du-Rhône is a unique countryside location where you can spot flamingos as you hike, cycle or drive around on your travels. In the town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer the Pont de Gau Ornithological Park is excellent for birdwatching. Côtes du Rhône is famous for its world-class wine production and no holiday in Provence is complete without attending a tasting.
How to reach Provence
If travelling from the U.K. you can fly Nice Côte d'Azur International Airport, which is France’s primary air hub in the south, in just about two hours from London or Manchester. Marseilles Provence Airport is another important route into the region, bringing you further west and so closer to destinations such as Aix-en-Provence. Direct flights are also available from a number of European countries.
The best time of year to visit Provence
You will be able to enjoy excellent weather for much of the year in Provence. Taking Nice as an example, temperatures frequently climb above 30°C in August, with beach-perfect weather often occurring from as early as May or June and lasting until October. Even in January the area is pleasantly mild and so escaping the winter to the gorgeous surroundings of Provence is another enviable option. The ‘shoulder season’, before or after the summer, is ideal for avoiding the intense heat.
