Beautiful Italian Lakeside Holiday Apartments in Cannobio
A holiday apartment in Cannobio puts you in the heart of northern Italy's world-famous Lake District. On the western shores of Lake Maggiore, just 5km from the Swiss border, Cannobio is a picturesque Italian town with quaint stone buildings, ancient church turrets and colourful facades set against a stunning backdrop of bush-clad hills leading up to snow-peaked mountains. Renting a holiday home or apartment in Cannobio is ideal for families and couples wanting direct access to the lake and town.
What to know about Cannobio
TUI Villas have a wide range of holiday homes and apartments in Cannobio to suit any taste and budget, so you'll find something suitable easily. Once that's sorted, you can enjoy the many highlights of the Piedmont region from this special Italian lakeside town.
A haven for recuperation or recreation
As Cannobio is a tiny Italian town on a beautiful lakefront, you can be assured you'll find rest, relaxation, recuperation and the opportunity to read a good book. However, Cannobio is also ideally placed for sports and recreation throughout the year, so active holiday-makers will be pleased, too. During winter, Lake Maggiore is famous for its ski resorts, which hosted the Winter Olympics in 2006. During autumn, the forested hills are awash with beautiful colours, and the temperatures are ideal for walking or mountain biking along one of the countless trails through the forest. During spring and summer, the lake beckons with water-skiing, windsurfing, sailing, swimming, and even parasailing and hang gliding if you're up for it!
Private family lakeside holiday homes
Find just the right holiday apartment in Cannobio, whether it be a cosy studio secluded in the forest or a two-storey family home right on the lake. TUI Villas has a range of spacious holiday apartments in Cannobio, from cheap and cheerful to luxurious modern villas with a private pool, satellite TV and a private boat dock on Lake Maggiore. The choices of family holiday homes around Cannobio cover a similar range, though the vast majority have a well-equipped kitchen, outdoor dining terrace for al fresco family meals and on-site parking. Of course, you can also look forward to breathtaking views of the surrounding alpine peaks. To the north are the rugged Swiss Alps, across the lake to the east is Lombardy, and Piedmont's Monte Mattac State Reserve is to the west, so there's no shortage of options.
Enjoy famous Piemontese cuisine
Anywhere you go in Italy, you'll find delicious food. Piedmont, Italy's northwesternmost region, however, has a few particularly intriguing specialities. The cuisine of Piedmont is infiltrated with more French and Austro-Hungarian influences than the cuisine in other parts of Italy. These influences mean French-style haute-cuisine desserts brought over the hills by the House of Savoy, rich, creamy cow's milk mountain cheeses, and fresh meat of such high quality it is often eaten raw – make sure to try beef tartar and the raw veal sausages from Bra. Of course, given Cannobio's location on Lake Maggiore, you add an abundance of amazing fresh seafood to the menu as well!
Popular spots around Cannobio
A holiday home in Cannobio provides a beautiful base for exploring the amazing area around Lake Maggiore. As Switzerland's biggest lake and the second-biggest in Italy, Lake Maggiore has no shortage of things to do, from making the most of its unspoilt natural alpine surroundings to soaking up the atmosphere at one of the many towns and small villages dotted around the lake. Highlights in the region include the aptly named Isola Dei Pescatori (Fishermen's Island), a minute island measuring 500 square metres but loaded with amazing seafood eateries; the historic resort town of Stresa, and the Alpina Botanical Garden – they're all within a 45-minute drive from any holiday apartment in Cannobio. Another option for getting around the lake is to take local boats and ferries, which take significantly shorter time than driving.
How to get there
Cannobio is easy to reach by car from Milan's Malpensa (1.5 hours), Linate (2 hours) or Bergamo (2 hours) airports, as well as the international airports in Turin (2.5 hours) and Zurich (3 hours). There is no train station in Cannobio, but it is well connected by bus if you're unable to drive yourself. The closest major Italian train station is 30km away along the lakeshore at Verbania-Pallanza, or you can whip across the lake (and border) to other major towns on both the Italian and Swiss sides of Lake Maggiore. If you're planning to head to Switzerland, Brissago (8km) is the closest town for train and bus connections, while Locarno (16km) is the nearest major town.
When to visit Cannobio
There's never a bad time of year to book a holiday apartment for Cannobio. TUI Villas offers a range of accommodation options to suit the season. During the cold alpine winter, you can settle in at a cosy ski cabin, the perfect base for hitting Lake Maggiore's world-famous ski slopes. Once the snow melts in spring and temperatures rise to the high teens, a range of stunning mountain hikes open up, and once the summer heat hits (temperatures can touch 30°C) you'd be hard pressed to find a more picturesque swimming spot than on the shores of mountain-rimmed Lake Maggiore.
Attend the Locarno International Film Festival
Just a half-hour drive from any holiday apartment in Cannobio, the Locarno Film Festival is where summer holidaymakers can rub shoulders with the stars and enjoy the best of contemporary European cinema. One of the longest continuously running film festivals on the esteemed European arthouse summer festival circuit, the Locarno Festival has attracted big-name directors, producers and actors with its pristine lakeside location, iconic outdoor-cinema screening and prestigious Golden Leopard jury award since 1946. The festival takes place every year during August, although tickets for the main events should be booked online well in advance. Even if you miss out on seats, Locarno is worth a visit during the festival, if only for the buzzing atmosphere and chance to spot international A-list celebrities.
