From a holiday apartment in Calonge, on the Costa Brava in Catalonia, explore the medieval town centre, maritime port, and local beaches, all whilst having a relaxing stay. Divided between a beachfront resort and a medieval hilltop village, the town offers both historically interesting sites, such as a medieval castle, along with child-friendly amenities like water parks and beaches with amenities.
The two faces of Calonge
Calonge is located on Spain's Costa Brava coastline. The town itself is divided into two contrasting parts. There's an old medieval town which is built on a hill, about 4km from the Bay of Sant Antoni, where the busier modern seaside resort can be found. The traditional old town centre has cobbled streets, a castle, and some architecturally interesting buildings. Down on the seaside promenade, you'll find shops, bars, and restaurants as well as a long sandy beach. There is also an old maritime port in Sant Antoni de Calonge with a small church and lots of little streets and shops to wander around.

Visit an old Catalonian village
For a bit of local culture, visit the lovely medieval village of Peratallada nearby, and learn all about its history and architecture. Enter the village through the old gateway and view an impressive church. The village has charming little Catalonian buildings and traditional cobbled streets. There's also a moat which encircles part of the fortified village. For refreshments, head to the cafe and bar inside the visitor information centre. Alternatively, visit the Village Medieval de Pals where there are many pretty coffee houses, restaurants, and shops. The architecture is incredible and the village has notably narrow roads; visitors will feel as if they have been transported back to another time, where they can observe a slower pace of life.
Take the kids to the beach or water park
Aquadiver has been named the best water park on the Costa Brava, thanks to its unique attractions and rides which kids of all ages will love. There's a wave pool, slides, and rubber dingy ride. One of the main attractions is a river mountain, a ride which takes you down the twists and turns of a mock cascading river. Alternatively, head to La Fosca Beach, a beautiful spot with soft sand and clear warm water. Pedalo boat and kayak hire is available here. Kids will also enjoy looking for crabs and fish in the beach's rock pools, and there are some nice cafes and bars along the coast. Cala El Golfet is another beautiful beach, seemingly hidden from the world. The drive to reach this beach is breathtaking.
Taste some great Spanish food
In Calonge, you will be able to enjoy typical Mediterranean cuisine, such as fish and seafood dishes served with fresh vegetables, olives, and olive oil. If you are looking to try local Catalan dishes, be sure to order escudella I carn d'olla, a vegetable broth made with pork, veal, and chicken. For a delicious treat try pa amb tomàquet for breakfast. This rustic bread is toasted and rubbed with tomato pulp, olive oil, and salt. It is often served with ham, sausage, or a slice of tortilla. Visit Mas Molla, a traditional winery which is located in an old farmhouse. The wines here are made naturally, using historical methods. The owners allow visitors to sample the wines and take guided tours.
