Umag is a city in western Istria and at the same time the westernmost place in Croatia, only 10 km from the Slovenian border. Umag was founded already in the ancient times when people started inhabiting an island which later became a peninsula. In written form, it was mentioned for the first time in the 6th century under the name of Humagum. It developed thanks to its favourable position; it was on the way of Aquilea founded by the Romans as their military base for Istria and Northern Adriatic. Just like all Istria, Umag was also under the rule of different empires.
